Final Day of FoodWhat?!

The final week of the FoodWhat?! Spring Internship. Woah the time has passed. Everyone coming together, working, learning, and eating together to have a great time during this awesome Spring 2015 at FoodWhat?!.

Today we have an excellent day ahead of us starting with Farm Olympics! Good Luck!

Then we will complete some evaluations of ourselves and the program for the last 12 weeks, do a little farming, learn how to write resumes and make some pizza.
We worked on prepping a bed and planting the 3 sisters: Popcorn, Beans, and Pumpkins
RESUME WORKSHOP:

PIZZA TIME:
We made pizza dough from scratch, topped it with all sorts of farm goodness and baked it in a cob oven...

Jesus got creative and added mulberries to his pizza
At the end of eating our pizza, we end our day as usual with triumphs and some awesome goodies. Some of these amazing people receive "Perfect Attendance" awards; everyone gets a cookbook, a FoodWhat?! t-shirt kindly donated by the amazing folks as Santa Cruz Sports Design, and a chance to say their final triumph from the internship

All these lovely people were awarded for thier perfect attendance in the program!

Last but not least, group photos. We've all worked our best each and every day to have fun, learn new things, gain confidence, farm, cook, and practice job skills, and meet new wonderful people.

Thank You Santa Cruz Sports Design for donating these AMAZING Tshirts! We are so grateful for your support!

RAISING THE ROOF!! CONSTRUCTION BEGINS!!

Thank you to all those who contributed to our Indiegogo campaign to build a gathering space and outdoor classroom for FoodWhat youth. We are excited to share that we've broken ground! With strong muscles, lots of sweat, and team work, the Friday Spring Crew worked hard to level the hillside for the new structure. Here are some highlights from the day.

We started the day with a team game of the Human Knot. We randomly grabbed hands with people across the circle and had to work together to figure out how to untie ourselves.

Then we headed out the site and start leveling the hillside for the new tent structure...

We rewarded our hard work with some spanikopita. We harvested the spinach that we planted out during the second week of the program and took it to the kitchen to cook it up, wrap it up, and eat it up.

WHEAT BERRIES TO FLOUR TO PRETZELS, OH MY!

It is not very often in our modern lives that get to see and be part of a process from seed all the way to the finished product, but this week we got to see what it takes to make whole wheat pretzels from scratch... really scratch...

We grew the wheat over the winter on the farm. We harvested the wheat heads, dried them, and today we turned those wheat heads into delicious food:

STEP 1: THRESHING

We pounded the wheat heads in order to release wheat berries

STEP 2: WINNOWING

We used a fan to blow
the chaff away from
the wheat berries and clean
the seed

STEP 3: GRIND INTO FLOUR

Natalia used a stone grinder
to grind to clean wheat
into whole wheat flour

STEP 4: MAKE PRETZEL DOUGH

STEP 5: SHAPE, BOIL, BAKE, EAT

Grace was super creative and made a
braided pretzel!

2015 DIG DAY!

On Sunday, April 26th, Food, What?! hosted our third annual Alumni reunion, "Dig Day"! Alumni from each of the last 8 years of FoodWhat, came back to the farm and reconnected for a blowout day of farm activity, playing and sharing a meal together.
The first part of the day was filled with excitement, as Alumni began showing up to the farm.

After some initial mingling and snacks, we dove into a couple farm projects. Some folks began digging, raking and composting beds, while another crew got started tearing down the fence where our new FoodWhat outdoor gathering space will be built!

While much of the crew got their hands dirty in the soil, a few Alumni got busy in the kitchen preparing lunch.

As we finished up on the farm, everyone headed out to the field to circle up and play some games. Doron officially welcomed everyone back, and then it was time for...

ROLL CALL!!!!
Alumni got with their year for a little photo opp --

Then it was Blob Tag time!

After a super fun game of tag, we all made moves back towards the circle bench to participate in an Alumni survey. The surveys offer us at FoodWhat an incredibly valuable opportunity to learn more about what Alumni are up to and gather feedback to create better programs for future FoodWhat youth.

Then it was time for lunch. Tacos! A FoodWhat favorite. Accompanied by fresh squeezed lemonade.

So great to come together again with our FoodWhat family!! Can't wait til next time. Much love!
